Alcoholics Anonymous

Al-Anon/Alateen

Al-Anon Family Group meetings allow the friends and family members of problem drinkers to share their experiences and learn how to apply the principles of the Al-Anon program to their individual situations. They learn that they are not alone in the problems they face, and that they have choices that lead to greater peace of mind, whether the drinker continues to drink or not.

Alcoholics Anonymous

Alcoholics Anonymous® is a fellowship of men and women who share their experience, strength and hope with each other that they may solve their common problem and help others to recover from alcoholism. The only requirement for membership is a desire to stop drinking. There are no dues or fees for AA membership; we are self-supporting through our own contributions. AA is not allied with any sect, denomination, politics, organization or institution; does not wish to engage in any controversy, neither endorses nor opposes any causes. Our primary purpose is to stay sober and help other alcoholics to achieve sobriety.

Allergy Testing

Allergy Testing

An allergy is the condition of having an exaggerated response to an aeroallergen, an otherwise harmless airborne substance. When an allergic person encounters a trigger such as pollens, spores, moulds, animal dander, house dust or mites, the immune system reacts by releasing chemicals which cause allergy symptoms. Allergy symptoms can occur perennially (all year long) or seasonally depending on the aeroallergen.

Common symptoms of allergies include:

• Nasal congestion
• Runny nose and eyes
• Sneezing
• Nose and eye itching
• Chronic cough
• Wheezing
• Shortness of breath
• Reddening of the eyes
• Excess tear production
• Puffy eyelids, especially in the morning

If you suffer from symptoms such as congestion, runny nose and eyes or asthma, allergy testing can help identify your triggers. Modern allergy treatment is simpler, safer, and more effective than ever!

The Arthritis Society

Charitable Organizations

Dream Mountains Foundation

The Dream Mountains Foundation was founded based on the belief that ordinary people are capable of extraordinary things.

When Canadian businessman Shawn Dawson set out to climb the highest peak on each of the seven continents, he felt that it would be more meaningful if his quest was part of a larger, long term goal.

Making it up the mountain requires teamwork, individual effort and a little luck. The team members challenge themselves by choosing to participate in a life changing experience while helping those who benefit from the funds raised.

The Dream Mountains Foundation raises funds and awareness for seven charities that reflect the mantra that helped Shawn reach his goal, 'one step at a time'.

Compression Stockings

Compression Stockings

Blood circulation, the movement of blood throughout the body, is crucial for proper functioning of the heart and brain. Circulatory problems arise when there is limited blood flow to the body, including legs, feet and toes. The interruption of normal blood flow results in poor circulation. Compression stockings are specialized hosiery items that provide graduated pressure on the lower leg and foot and, in some cases, the thigh, to alleviate blood circulatory problems!

Unlike traditional stockings, compression stockings are made of elastic fibers or rubber to create pressure and increase circulation on the legs, ankles and feet. The socks or stockings are normally donned upon rising in the morning, and removed at night. Throughout the day the compression they provide will prevent blood from pooling in leg veins and helping overall circulation!

Acne

Acne is a very common skin condition that affects millions of Canadians.

Acne is the term for inflammation of the sebaceous glands. It results in plugged pores, pimples, and even deeper lumps that occur on the face, neck, chest, back, shoulders and even the upper arms. Most people have suffered from acne at some point in their lives.

Acne is most common during adolescence, affecting three out of four teenagers. However, it can also affect people in their 20s, 30s and 40s and pregnant women are also prone to breakouts. While not a life threatening condition, acne can be emotionally upsetting and disfiguring. Acne can also lead to serious and permanent scarring.

Improvements in acne treatment over the past 5 years have made even the most difficult acne cases treatable and have produced excellent long term results. Appletree acne clinics are held each week for all grades and types of acne.

Treatments include:

• Photodynamic Therapy
• Facial Peels (for scarring)

Disk Decompression Therapy

Broadview Spine & Health Centre

The Broadview Spine & Health Centre is the leader in Eastern Ontario for treating chronic lower back and neck pain utilizing leading-edge technology.

Clinic Director, Dr. Joseph Lawrence has helped hundreds of patients with chronic back and neck pain due to bulging, herniated or degenerated discs, stenosis and failed back surgery. As one of only six doctors in Canada with post-graduate training in non-surgical disc decompression therapy, Dr. Lawrence strives to ensure that selected candidates receive the best outcomes from this approach.

In addition to non-surgical disc decompression therapy, Dr. Lawrence and his qualified staff utilize another first for the Ottawa area; Active Therapeutic Movement. This specialized form of resisted isometric exercises strengthens weak back muscles associated with chronic back and neck pain.

One of the more difficult factors to manage in back and neck pain is associated inflammation. As a consequence, Dr. Lawrence and staff have added a class 3b cold laser to their treatment arsenal. This painless, drug-free approach has been an indispensable technology to help his patients get better faster.

“Our goal is to get patients better faster using the best technology there is.”

Vitamin D

Top 10 Tips

VITAMIN D
________________________________________

1. Bone up on vitamin D.
Vitamin D – which comprises D2 (ergocalciferol) and Vitamin D3
(cholecalciferol) – is important to help maintain bone health.  The body cannot optimally absorb calcium from food or supplements with adequate intake of Vitamin D.  Vitamin D3 helps increase the body's ability to absorb calcium by as much as 30-80%, while low Vitamin D levels can impair calcium absorption.

2. Osteoporosis treatment
Osteoporosis affects one in four women over the age of 50 and one in eight men over the age of 50. 1,3  Several studies have found that more than fifty percent of people with osteoporosis have inadequate levels of Vitamin D.2  In the treatment of osteoporosis, it is essential to get Vitamin D and calcium through all possible sources.2  According to the Osteoporosis Canada 2002 Guidelines, Vitamin D, along with calcium, are important adjuncts to osteoporosis therapy. 3

3. How much is enough?
Many studies worldwide point to a high prevalence of inadequate Vitamin D in humans – especially in older adults who are also likely to have osteoporosis.2 The Osteoporosis Canada 2002 Guidelines recommend an intake from all sources (diet and supplements) of 400 international units (IUs) of Vitamin D3 per day for adults up to 50 years of age or 800 IUs of Vitamin D3 per day for adults over 50 years of age.2

4. Age makes a difference
The body's ability to manufacture Vitamin D declines with age – as Vitamin D is produced less efficiently through the skin in older people.4  Older adults, in particular, need to monitor their diets to ensure they are getting enough Vitamin D.

5. Only a limited supply
Unlike calcium, the sources of Vitamin D are limited.  The body produces Vitamin D in the skin when exposed to ultraviolet B (UVB) light.  It can also be obtained through diet (such as from fortified milk and fatty fish) and supplements.2

6. Here comes the sun
Canadians are likely to suffer low Vitamin D levels during the late fall and winter (October to March) when Vitamin D production in the skin virtually stops.  During this time, sunlight must pass a much longer distance through the atmosphere and most of the UV light is absorbed.4 As you know, it is important to protect the skin from damage by applying sunscreen.  However, sunscreen interferes with the cutaneous production of Vitamin D3.4 Other factors such as clothing and darkly pigmented skin may also hinder the body's ability to produce adequate amounts of Vitamin D3 in the skin from sunshine.2

7. Keep Pouring
Milk fortified with Vitamin D3 is our main dietary source of Vitamin D.  Milk contains 100 IUs of Vitamin D per 250 ml glass.1 However, for person over the age of 50 to achieve Osteoporosis Canada recommended daily allowance of Vitamin D3 from milk alone, a person would need to drink eight 250 ml glasses of fortified milk every day.

8. Bring on the fish
Fish oils and fatty fish such as salmon, sardines, and mackerel are among the only significant natural dietary sources of Vitamin D that can help provide the daily allowance of Vitamin D recommended by the Osteoporosis Canada 2002 Guidelines.5

9. Look at the options
Since it may be difficult to get enough Vitamin D from natural sources such as sunlight and diet, you may with to consider other options.  Remember that a daily dose of 400 IUs or 800 IUs of Vitamin D3 (depending on age of the adult) is essential for optimal calcium absorption and overall bone health.2, 3

10. Can there be too much?
Vitamin D toxicity has not been documented during chronic therapy in generally healthy adults at a dose less than 10,000 IU/day.  In a clinical study of healthy adults, a 4000 IU daily dose of Vitamin D3 for up to five months was not associated with hypercalciuria or hypercalcemia.2, 6

Previous Political Action Activities
As president of the Cedarhill Community Association, in the early 1980s I was able to kill a proposed snow dump, move the 416 highway 1500 feet to the west side of a Quarry to minimize its noise impact, and move a set of hydro lines and towers to another neighborhood several miles to the west. In April 2011, my letters and private lobbying were instrumental in accelerating completion of a water main, so as to minimize the period when a ban on outdoor watering was in effect.

While president of the Ottawa Academy of Medicine in 1986, I opposed total government control over health care, and raised the possibility that this might have the unintended consequence of jeopardizing confidential patient records. This is only now being increasingly recognized, and was a major topic of discussion at the Ontario Medical Council meeting in Toronto in late April 2014.

Due to my first-hand experience in the Martin Luther King riots when a student at Hopkins, I feared that the Quebec independence movement would lead to similar violence in Canada. It was I who first thought of a powerful argument that would persuade Quebecers of an advantage of retaining their Canadian citizenship, namely preservation of hospital portability. Hospitals across Canada routinely quadruple their rates for “Non-residents of Canada,” which residents of an independent Quebec would be. Those with pre-existing diabetes mellitus, cardiac disease, or malignancies might find it impossible to purchase private travel insurance to visit friends and relatives in other provinces. Op-ed articles and letters of mine were published in the Globe and Mail, Toronto Star, Montreal Gazette, and in most major cities from Vancouver to St. John’s. I paid out of my own pocket for half a dozen of these to be translated into French. All appeared in Le Droit (Ottawa-Gatineau), two in Le Devoir (Montreal) with not one word edited out, and one in Le Journal de Montreal – circulation 400,000. Recall that the Quebec referendum was won by only 55,000 votes!

In late April 2003, my op-ed article in the Toronto Star was instrumental in forcing the Ernie Eves Conservative government to grant financial compensation to those placed in quarantine because of SARS.

After 20 years, I again became involved in Quebec politics when Pauline Maurois called an election. Unlike the federal senators and MPs – who remained silent – I formulated a rebuttal to her assertion that the border of Quebec with the Rest of Canada would be “seamless” and Quebecers could still use Canadian passports. I also obtained up-to-date hospital fees. For example, the daily charge for an ICU bed for a “Non-resident of Canada”   was $13,000 at the Vancouver General Hospital, $17,000 at the Calgary Foothills Hospital, and $17,759 at the main teaching hospital in Halifax.

Large op-ed articles of mine were published in the Halifax Chronicle-Herald, and the Toronto Sun. Mine was the “Letter of the Day” in the Vancouver Sun and the Ottawa Citizen. I was extensively quoted in articles by Joel-Denis Bellavance in La Presse in Montreal and Le Droit in Ottawa-Gatineau.

Over a two-week period, I exchanged e-mails daily with a specialist in Montreal. I sent old and new articles to him, and he in turn forwarded them to the Quebec Liberal Party. These were likely distributed to each riding association, and to the Liberal Party leader, Dr.Philippe Couillard.

Possibly these articles contributed to the massive defeat of the PQ by a margin of 70 to 30 seats.

In the past seven years, the percentage of persons working full-time after age 65 has doubled. This applies to physicians. In Ontario, there are over 1500 “working physicians” over age 70, a number projected to increase by 75% over the next ten years. Until recently, physicians could only purchase disability insurance until age 70. In part due to my lobbying efforts at the OMA Council, in June 2015 Sunlife announced that coverage would be extended to physicians as old as age 80.

In the past few months, I have written a number of letters and op-ed articles dealing with the impact on physicians and the public of unilateral changes in the OHIP regulations. These include essentially freezing the total OHIP budget despite a growing population of older, sicker patients, restricting access by new physicians to 'family health teams' in larger urban areas, and eliminating a 50% premium of follow-up visits by certain subspecialists for some 30 'chronic diseases' including diabetes mellitus, COPD, congestive heart failure, and dementia. I have urged the federal government to take a more active role in health care delivery, including helping to develop a national pharmacare program.

Most recently, I have written about the refugee crisis in Europe. I have suggested that Canada take in more refugees, and that Ottawa  fully cover their healthcare costs. I have suggested that agencies of the United Nations and European Union provide extra funding to southern European countries so as to encourage a greater number of the migrants to settle there, and provide an economic stimulus where it is needed.

Pap Clinic

All women between the ages of 18 and 69 are at risk for cervical cancer and should have an annual pap test.

The pap test (also known as the pap smear) is a simple test that can help prevent cervical cancer. The two minute procedure detects cell changes on your cervix that, if left untreated for several years, could eventually turn into cervical cancer.

If you have been with the same partner for many years and have had three normal annual paps in a row, you can reduce the frequency to every two years A pap smear is a test used to detect abnormalities or precancerous cells that may lead to cancer. It is a simple quick procedure that is very accurate. An additional effective way to prevent cervical cancer is through vaccination. Plantar Wart Treatment

Plantar Wart Clinic

Plantar warts are a result of the most common viral infection of the skin. It is estimated that 25% of the population has a wart at any given time. Appletree Medical Group offers plantar wart clinics designed to treat your warts in the most effective, quickest way possible. Each treatment is by appointment and your warts will usually clear up in 6-10 sessions. Plantar wart treatment is covered by OHIP.

Common symptoms of plantar warts include the following:

• Small, fleshy, grainy growths on the soles of your feet
• Pain when walking or standing
• Poor posture due to leg or back pain
• Firm, warty lesions with tiny pinpoint dark spots inside
• Located over areas of pressure or bony point
• Several warts may fuse to form mosaic warts

Plantar warts are often difficult to treat and self-treating usually fails. The most proven method of treating plantar warts is repeated application of specific chemicals, freezing or chryo-therapy done in the doctor’s office.

Urology

Rockland MD - Urology Services

At RocklandMD, our urologists are among the most experienced in Canada and for that matter, are often called upon to train fellow surgeons. Our patients also benefit from the latest technology: the GreenLight™ XPS 180W.
GreenLight™ Laser Therapy combines the effectiveness of the “gold standard” transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP) surgical procedure with fewer side effects. Several studies have shown comparable outcomes between the two procedures. During the GreenLight™ procedure, the physician uses a laser to remove the excess prostate tissue. The result is a larger channel for urine flow to pass through. Removing the excess tissue eliminates most lower urinary tract symptoms.

Urology Assessments:

•Elevated PSA
•Blood in urine (hematuria)
•Urinary problems
•Infection
•Enlarged prostate
•Urinary tract infection
•Urethral stricture
•Vasectomy (family planning)
•Kidney problems (tumor, cancer, stone, cyst)
•Adrenal gland problems (tumor, cancer)
•Ureter problems (stone, tumor)
•Urinary bladder problems (stone, tumor, cancer)
•Urethral problems (stricture, tumor)
•Penile problems (tight foreskin, phimosis, circumcision, genital warts, lesions, erectile dysfunction [we only do circumcisions on people of more than 16 years old]).
•Cystoscopy

Weight Loss Management

Rockland MD - Bariatric Surgery

RocklandMD surgical center is the first ambulatory surgical center in Quebec to become accredited under the joint program of Accreditation Canada and le Conseil Québécois d’agrément.

RocklandMD is a center of excellence in bariatric surgery.

The following procedures are the 2 most common procedure performed at RocklandMD:

Vertical gastrectomy
The laparoscopic vertical gastrectomy, also called parietal gastrectomy is an operation that aims to be a restrictive in nature and is associated with very few risks.
This procedure aims to remove by laparoscopy, the external part of the stomach.  A thin vertical gastric tube is left in place which can only contain a small portion of food at a time. In addition, when removing the large gastric tuberosity, we remove a source of secretion of hormones that control hunger.
After the vertical gastrectomy, the patient’s weight loss is considerable.  The results of the vertical gastrectomy are so great, that often one operation is needed.
The vertical gastrectomy is a reasonable alternative to gastric derivation because since there is not intestinal bypass, risk of complications, malabsorption syndrome dumping, anastomotic ulcer or intestinal obstruction are reduced.

Gastric bypass
The gastric bypass is a laparoscopic restrictive procedure performed to shrink the volume of the stomach as well as create a small intestine derivation on the stomach in order to carry the food that is ingested further away. This creates a bypass malabsorption resulting in weight loss as the amount of nutrients absorbed is reduced.
The operation involves in cutting the stomach to create smaller gastric pouches of approximately 30 to 40 cc. Then, a loop of the small intestine is connected directly to the pouch. The length of the loop varies according to the importance of obesity.
Given that there is a decrease in the volume of the stomach, it is clear that a large quantity of patients will notice a decrease in the amount of food they can consume. This procedure is considered a major surgery.

The RocklandMD surgical team deals with all the surgical aspects, from the pre-operative preparations, follow-ups and nutritional consultations.

The obese patient that doesn't fit our bariatric surgery criteria’s will be supported by the RocklandMD Center.
